Is Nando's Halal? The Answer for Every Country, and What "Halal Chicken" Means

In the UK, some Nando’s restaurants serve halal chicken, but no Nando’s is a halal restaurant. Nando’s UK says, “Our restaurants aren’t halal, but we have a number of restaurants in the UK that serve 100% halal chicken.” Its list has 106 such restaurants. The chicken is pre stunned before slaughter, and these restaurants still serve alcohol.

Outside the UK, it varies. Every Nando’s in Ontario serves halal chicken, but British Columbia and Alberta don’t. No Nando’s in the US serves halal chicken. Nando’s Australia says it “is not a Halal brand”. This guide gives each country’s answer from Nando’s own statements and explains what you should know before you eat.

Is Nando’s halal in the UK?

Partly. Here’s what Nando’s UK says on its halal page:

• Halal chicken at selected restaurants. Around 106 UK restaurants serve only halal chicken. The rest serve chicken that isn’t halal.
• Only the chicken. In these restaurants, “we only serve chicken that’s certified halal”. Nando’s also says it doesn’t handle any pork ingredients.
• Pre stunned. “Our halal chickens are pre stunned to minimise suffering and fear before they’re slaughtered.”
• Who authorises it. Nando’s says its halal chicken “is authorised by leading Halal Food Authorities”, and that restaurants display certificates from accredited factories.
• Separate supply chain. Halal chicken is kept separate at suppliers and in distribution centres.

Who certifies Nando’s UK chicken?

Nando’s doesn’t name a certifier on its page. In 2016, after confusion online, the Halal Food Authority (HFA) said: “HFA does NOT certify any chicken supply for Nandos.” It added that alcohol in the restaurants was one reason. At the time, Nando’s said its halal chicken came from Cargill Freemans of Newent, authorised by the Institute of Islamic Jurisprudence (IIJ).

What the stunning means for you

UK certifiers differ on stunning:

• The IIJ and HFA accept stunning, as long as the bird is alive when it’s slaughtered.
• The Halal Monitoring Committee (HMC) doesn’t accept any stunning.

If you only eat HMC certified or unstunned chicken, Nando’s UK won’t meet your standard.

Alcohol in halal Nando’s

Nando’s restaurants that serve halal chicken still serve beer and wine. For some Muslims this doesn’t affect the food. Others avoid eating where alcohol is served. In 2012, Mufti Yaseen Shaikh of MuftiSays advised Hanafi Muslims to avoid Nando’s, citing doubts over the supply chain and the fact that “the same hands serving the food are used to serve the alcohol”. Nando’s supply arrangements have changed since then, but the alcohol point still applies.

Which Nando’s are halal in the UK?

Nando’s keeps an up to date list on its halal page, grouped by region: Central, North, South, East and West London; the North; the Midlands; the South; the West; the East; Scotland; and Wales. In September 2026 it listed 106 restaurants, with the most in the North (27) and the Midlands (20). Branches change, so check Nando’s halal list or look for the halal sign at the entrance before you order.

Is Nando’s halal in London?

Is Nando’s halal in Canada?

In Ontario, yes. Nando’s Canada says, “All of our restaurants in Ontario sell Halal Chicken. Is Nando’s halal in the USA?

No. Nando’s US says, “Unfortunately, none of the restaurants in the US serve halal chicken.”

Is Nando’s halal in Australia?

Not certified. Nando’s Australia says, “Nando’s is not a Halal brand and does not pay fees for certification.” It adds that its bastings are halal and some of its chicken suppliers are halal certified. If you want to avoid the grill where bacon is cooked, Nando’s suggests asking staff to cook your chicken on the open flame grill rather than the flat top grill.

Is Nando’s halal in South Africa?

Nando’s South Africa has halaal certified stores. In 2011, the National Independent Halaal Trust (NIHT) confirmed that “all chickens supplied to our Halaal certified stores emanate from local Halaal certified suppliers”. Look for the certificate in the store.

Is Nando’s halal in Malaysia?

Yes. Nando’s Malaysia is halal certified by JAKIM.

What’s on the menu besides chicken?

At UK halal chicken restaurants, only the chicken is certified. Nando’s says it doesn’t handle pork. Sides such as chips, rice, halloumi and corn contain no meat, but they’re cooked in a restaurant that isn’t halal certified. Check the ingredients of sauces and marinades if you avoid alcohol based flavourings.
