Is Five Guys Halal? It Depends on the Store, Not Just the Country

Five Guys is halal only in some countries, and in the UK only in some stores. Three UK stores are fully halal certified by the Halal Certification Organisation (HCO) and sell no pork or alcohol: Birmingham Fort, London Park Royal and Manchester Arndale. About 30 more UK stores use halal beef but also cook pork bacon on separate grills, and many of them sell beer. The rest of the UK serves no halal meat.

In the United States, Canada and Australia, Five Guys is not halal. Five Guys says its beef in those markets “is not kosher, halal or organic”. This guide lists every UK halal store, explains what each type of store means for you, and covers other countries.

The three types of UK store

Five Guys UK sorts its restaurants into three groups on its halal information page. Which group your store is in decides the answer.

Fully halal certified stores (HCO)

• London Park Royal
• Manchester Arndale

Five Guys says there is no bacon or alcohol in these stores. This is the only type of Five Guys store in the UK that a certifier has inspected as a whole restaurant.

Halal beef stores (pork bacon cooked separately)

These stores serve halal beef burgers, but pork bacon is also on the menu, cooked on separate grills:

Birmingham Five Ways, Bournemouth Castle Point, Cardiff Red Dragon Centre, Coventry, Dudley Merry Hill, Edinburgh Fountain Park, Enfield, Glasgow GRID, High Wycombe, Leeds Trinity, Liverpool Queen Square, London Bond Street, London Brixton, London Croydon Valley, London Kensington High Street, London Queensway, London Westfield Shepherd’s Bush, London Westfield Stratford, London Wimbledon, London Wood Green, Manchester Fort, Manchester Parrs Wood, Milton Keynes, Nottingham Long Row, Peterborough, Preston, Reading Oracle, Sheffield The Moor and Stoke on Trent.

Many of these stores also sell Hawkstone beer. One point to watch: Five Guys UK lists London Bond Street and London Queensway both as stores without alcohol and as stores selling Hawkstone beer. Ask the store if it matters to you.

Every other UK store

If your Five Guys isn’t on either list, its beef isn’t halal. Check the Five Guys UK halal page before you go, because the lists change.

Is the beef at a halal beef store halal for you?

The beef is halal certified. What differs between Muslims is how they treat the rest of the kitchen.

• Many Muslims eat there. The burger patty is halal, bacon is cooked on separate grills, and they avoid bacon and anything cooked alongside it.
• Others avoid these stores. They are concerned about shared fryers, utensils, toppings and staff handling pork, and prefer a fully certified restaurant.

Neither view is unusual. If you want a store where no pork is on site, choose one of the three fully certified stores.

Is Five Guys beef stunned?

Five Guys UK says its burgers use halal certified British beef prepared “without compromising on animal welfare according to UK and EU legislation”. It doesn’t say whether the cattle are stunned.

HCO, the certifier, allows approved stunning, as long as the animal is alive at the time of slaughter and the slaughter is done by a Muslim. HCO is accredited by the Gulf Accreditation Center (GAC). If you only eat meat from animals that were not stunned, Five Guys UK is unlikely to meet your standard.

Are Five Guys hot dogs halal?

In the UK, Five Guys says the hot dogs in its halal stores are made with halal certified beef. HCO’s own FAQ says Five Guys stores it certifies don’t offer hot dogs. The two statements don’t fully match, so ask the store before you order a hot dog.

In the US and Canada, hot dogs aren’t halal.

Is Five Guys halal in London?

Only at certain stores. Park Royal is the one fully certified London store. Bond Street, Brixton, Croydon Valley, Kensington High Street, Queensway, Westfield Shepherd’s Bush, Westfield Stratford, Wimbledon and Wood Green serve halal beef with pork bacon on separate grills. Other London stores don’t serve halal beef.

Is Five Guys halal in the USA?

No. Five Guys US says its beef “is not kosher, halal or organic”. There are no halal Five Guys restaurants in the US as a chain.

What can Muslims eat at a US Five Guys?

Five Guys fries are cooked in refined peanut oil and nothing else, according to Five Guys. Whether you eat them depends on how you view a kitchen that also handles non halal meat.

Is Five Guys halal in Canada?

Is Five Guys halal in France?

At some stores. Five Guys France says more than 15 of its stores serve halal beef, with bacon cooked on separate grills. Check Five Guys France’s halal page for the current list.

Is Five Guys halal in Malaysia?

Five Guys Malaysia uses halal certified meat, according to Have Halal Will Travel’s 2023 report, but the restaurants themselves don’t hold halal certificates. Many Malaysian Muslims eat there on that basis; others wait for a restaurant certificate.

Is Five Guys halal in Australia and Singapore?

No. Five Guys Australia says, “We do not offer Halal in this market”, and Five Guys Singapore gives the same answer.

How to check your Five Guys

1. Check the country. Use the table at the top.
2. In the UK, find your store on the Five Guys halal page. Fully certified, halal beef or neither.
3. Ask to see the certificate at a fully certified store. It should name HCO and that store.
4. At a halal beef store, ask about fryers and grills if shared equipment matters to you.
5. Ask whether the beef is stunned if you only eat meat from animals that weren’t.
