What Chick-fil-A says about halal

Chick-fil-A answers the question directly on its customer support site: it doesn’t have menu items that meet halal standards. It points customers with dietary needs to its nutrition and allergen information and its Dietary Preference Center, which lists the ingredients in each item.

That’s clearer than most fast food chains manage. It also settles a question many Muslims ask online. Even though the owners are Christian, and some scholars permit the meat of the People of the Book, Chick-fil-A doesn’t claim its chicken meets any halal standard. Why Chick-fil-A isn’t halal

Halal chicken has to meet a few conditions. The bird must be alive and healthy at slaughter. A Muslim slaughters it by cutting the throat and major blood vessels while saying the name of Allah, and the blood drains out. Most halal certifiers in North America also want the chicken hand slaughtered rather than cut by machine, and many don’t accept stunning that could kill the bird first.

Chick-fil-A’s chicken comes from large poultry suppliers, and the company doesn’t claim the birds are slaughtered by these rules. Changing that would mean certified slaughter lines big enough for more than 3,000 restaurants, plus separate handling in every kitchen. Chick-fil-A hasn’t announced any plan to do this.

Does Chick-fil-A have pork?

Yes, in the US. A popular social media claim says Chick-fil-A serves no pork. That’s wrong. The US breakfast menu includes items made with bacon and sausage, such as biscuits and breakfast burritos.

This matters for two reasons. First, it shows the “no pork, so it must be halal” argument doesn’t hold even on its own terms. Second, pork is prepared in the same kitchen as everything else, which matters if you avoid cross contact.

Is Chick-fil-A halal in Canada?

No. Chick-fil-A opened its first Canadian restaurant in Toronto and has since expanded across Ontario and into Alberta, with restaurants in British Columbia announced. None of these restaurants serve halal chicken.

Is Chick-fil-A halal in the UK?

No. Chick-fil-A’s first UK restaurant opened on 24 October 2025 at 34 to 35 Commercial Street in Leeds, and the company plans five UK restaurants in its first two years. Chick-fil-A says all its UK chicken comes from the UK and Ireland, and it uses 100% free range eggs.

None of that makes the chicken halal. Chick-fil-A hasn’t announced halal certification from the Halal Food Authority (HFA), the Halal Monitoring Committee (HMC) or any other UK body. Like its US restaurants, the Leeds branch is closed on Sundays.

This surprised many UK Muslims, because many fried chicken chains in the UK serve halal chicken. If you’re in Leeds, Bradford or Manchester, there are plenty of certified halal chicken shops within walking distance of most high streets.

Is Chick-fil-A halal in Singapore?

No. Chick-fil-A opened at Bugis+, 201 Victoria Street, on 11 December 2025. It is not a halal certified eatery, so it doesn’t carry a MUIS certificate. What can Muslims eat at Chick-fil-A?

If you’re at a Chick-fil-A with friends or on a road trip, a few items contain no meat. Whether they’re acceptable to you depends on how strictly you avoid cross contact.

About the fryers

Chick-fil-A cooks its breaded chicken in fully refined peanut oil. The waffle fries are cooked in canola oil, in separate fryers. That keeps the fries apart from the chicken during frying. It doesn’t remove the wider risk of cross contact in a kitchen that handles non halal chicken and pork. Chick-fil-A itself says it can’t guarantee any item is free from allergens because of shared cooking areas.

A practical rule

If you avoid only haram ingredients, fries, salads without chicken and drinks are usually fine. If you avoid kitchens that cook non halal meat, Chick-fil-A isn’t a good choice, even for sides.

What about the “People of the Book” argument?

Some Muslims say Chick-fil-A is fine because it’s owned by a Christian family, and the Quran permits “the food of those who were given the Scripture” (Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:5).

Scholars disagree on how far that permission goes today. A minority accept meat from Christian and Jewish countries without further checks. Most contemporary scholars and the major halal certifiers say the permission only applies when the animal is slaughtered in a way close to Islamic slaughter, by a practising Christian or Jew, with no stunning that kills first. Industrial poultry lines, where machines do the cut and no name is said, don’t meet that standard for them.
