Is Popeyes Halal? The Answer Depends on Your Country

Popeyes is halal in the UK and Singapore, and not halal in the United States. Popeyes UK says on its own website, “All of our chicken is Halal”, including the chicken served at breakfast. Popeyes Singapore is certified by MUIS. In the US, Popeyes doesn’t serve halal chicken as a chain, and US halal certifiers can’t vouch for it.

Canada sits in between. Many Canadian Popeyes restaurants have served halal chicken for years, but it’s decided franchise by franchise, and a 2024 CBC investigation found staff overstating what their certificates covered. This guide gives the answer for each country and shows you how to check the branch you’re at.

Why Popeyes is halal in some countries and not others

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen was founded by Al Copeland in New Orleans in 1972. Since 2017 it has been owned by Restaurant Brands International (RBI), the company that also owns Burger King and Tim Hortons. Popeyes now has more than 5,400 restaurants in 51 countries and territories, and about 98% of them are run by franchisees.

Each franchisee buys chicken from suppliers in its own market. Where the local operator has chosen halal chicken, as in the UK, the whole chain in that country is halal. Where it hasn’t, as in the US, it isn’t. So always check the country first, then the branch.

Is Popeyes halal in the UK?

Yes. Popeyes UK answers this in its FAQ: “All of our chicken is Halal.” A separate answer confirms the chicken on its breakfast menu is halal too. The UK is the only country where Popeyes serves breakfast.

Popeyes opened its first UK restaurant at Westfield Stratford City in London on 20 November 2021, and now has restaurants from Aberdeen to Brighton. Its chicken is marinated for at least 12 hours and hand battered in the restaurant.

Who certifies Popeyes UK?

Popeyes UK’s FAQ doesn’t name a certifier. The Halal Certification Organisation (HCO) says in its own FAQ that it certifies selected Popeyes branches, as listed on the official Popeyes website. HCO allows approved stunning, as long as the bird is alive at slaughter and the slaughter is done by a Muslim.

That matters to some Muslims. The Halal Food Authority (HFA) and HCO accept stunning where the bird is alive at slaughter; the Halal Monitoring Committee (HMC) doesn’t. If you only eat chicken that wasn’t stunned, ask your local branch before you order.

Is Popeyes halal in London?

Yes. Every Popeyes UK restaurant, including those in London, serves halal chicken, according to Popeyes UK.

Is Popeyes halal in Canada?

Often, but not guaranteed. Popeyes opened its first Canadian restaurant in Toronto in 1984, and many Canadian branches have served halal chicken since the 1980s. When RBI bought Popeyes in 2017, Yahoo Canada called a dozen franchises in the Greater Toronto Area, London (Ontario) and Calgary, and all said they served halal chicken.

But there’s no national halal policy you can check. In October 2024, CBC Marketplace visited 10 fast food restaurants in the Greater Toronto Area, including two Popeyes. At one Popeyes, staff showed a halal certificate issued to a meat supplier and suggested it meant the whole restaurant was certified. None of the 10 restaurants CBC visited held a halal certificate for the restaurant itself. Popeyes didn’t respond to CBC’s request for comment.

A supplier certificate tells you the chicken was halal when it left the plant. It doesn’t cover storage, frying or serving in that restaurant. If that matters to you, look for a certificate from a Canadian body such as HMA or ISNA Canada that names the restaurant’s own address.

Is Popeyes halal in Toronto, Mississauga and Calgary?

Is Popeyes halal in the USA?

No. Popeyes in the United States doesn’t serve halal chicken as a chain. When RBI bought Popeyes in 2017, it confirmed that US locations don’t serve halal meat. Halal Monitoring Services (HMS), a US certifier, says it cannot confirm that any Popeyes chicken is zabiha halal and has no Popeyes locations in its directory.

There’s a second issue with US Popeyes. In 2023, Halal Watch published a reply from Popeyes US guest care stating that all fried menu items at US restaurants are cooked using beef tallow. If that’s still the case, even the fries and other fried sides aren’t halal, because the beef fat isn’t from halal slaughtered cattle.

What about “halal Popeyes” in Houston, Chicago or New York?

You’ll find posts and listings for halal Popeyes in some US cities. A small number of franchisees may buy halal chicken, but that isn’t Popeyes policy in the US, and the frying oil issue above would still apply. Before you trust a claim, ask for a current certificate that names that restaurant, and ask what the fryers use.

Is Popeyes halal in Singapore?

Yes. Popeyes Singapore is certified by MUIS, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore, covering its fried chicken, sauces and sides. Certificates are issued per outlet and renewed regularly, so check the MUIS HalalSG register for your branch.

Is Popeyes halal in the Middle East?

Yes. In the Gulf states, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, meat sold to the public must be halal, and Popeyes restaurants there serve halal chicken.

Is Popeyes halal in Malaysia?

Popeyes has left Malaysia. Its outlets, including the one at KLIA2, have closed, and it held no active JAKIM certificate when it left.

What can Muslims eat at a US Popeyes?

Because of the beef tallow report, the safe list at a US Popeyes is short.

In the UK, where all chicken is halal, the question is only about what you personally avoid, such as ingredients like alcohol in sauces. Check the allergen and ingredient information on the Popeyes UK website.

How to check if your Popeyes is halal

1. Check the country. Use the table at the top of this page.
2. Read the official source. In the UK, Popeyes UK’s FAQ. In Singapore, the MUIS HalalSG register.
3. Ask for the restaurant’s own certificate. It should name the restaurant’s address, the certifier and a date that hasn’t expired. A supplier’s certificate isn’t enough.
4. Ask who certifies it and whether the chicken is stunned, if hand slaughter matters to you.
5. In the US, ask about the fryer oil as well as the chicken.
