Is KFC Halal? A Country by Country Guide for Muslims

KFC is halal in some countries and not in others. There is no single global halal policy. Each country, and sometimes each restaurant, sets its own rules. KFC is fully halal in Malaysia and Singapore, where JAKIM and MUIS certify it. It is partly halal in the UK, where around 200 restaurants are certified by the Halal Food Authority. In Canada, most Ontario locations switched to halal chicken in 2024. In the United States, KFC is not halal certified, apart from a handful of franchise locations.

This guide gives the answer for each country, names who certifies it, and shows you how to check the branch you’re standing outside. We checked KFC’s own statements, certifier notices and news reports for every claim below.

Why KFC isn’t halal everywhere

KFC is owned by Yum! Brands and runs nearly 34,000 restaurants in 149 countries and territories. Most of them are run by franchisees, local companies that buy the right to use the KFC name. Each franchisee buys chicken from local suppliers.

So the halal question is really a supply question. Where local law or the market expects halal meat, as in Malaysia or the Gulf states, the franchisee buys halal chicken for every store. Where it doesn’t, the franchisee buys whatever chicken meets its normal standards, and halal becomes an extra cost that only some stores take on.

That is why the same Zinger can be halal in Kuala Lumpur and not halal in Chicago. It’s also why you should check the country first, then the branch.

Is KFC halal in Canada?

In most of Ontario, yes. In the rest of Canada, it depends on the store, so check before you order.

On May 15, 2024, KFC Canada began serving halal certified chicken across its Ontario restaurants, with Thunder Bay and Ottawa left out at first. The company said all chicken products would be halal certified, including chicken on the bone, tenders, popcorn chicken, sandwiches and wings. Pork, including bacon, was removed from the menu, except at stores shared with Taco Bell.

The chicken comes from Maple Lodge Farms, which owns the Zabiha Halal brand. KFC said it would roll the change out across Canada by the end of 2024. Reports from 2025 and 2026 suggest most Canadian locations now serve halal chicken, but we could not find a store by store list from KFC Canada. KFC Canada’s own FAQ page doesn’t mention halal at all.

What the CBC found

In October 2024, CBC Marketplace visited 10 fast food restaurants in the Greater Toronto Area, including two KFCs. At both, staff couldn’t say whether the halal chicken was hand slaughtered or machine slaughtered. At one, staff showed a certificate for the meat supplier as if it covered the whole restaurant. None of the 10 restaurants held a certificate for the restaurant itself. KFC did not respond to CBC’s questions.

This matters because a supplier certificate tells you the chicken was halal when it left the plant. It doesn’t cover how the chicken is stored, fried or served in that restaurant.

Is KFC halal in Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton and Scarborough?

These are all in Ontario and were part of the May 2024 switch. Locations shared with Taco Bell are the exception to watch for, because they kept pork on the menu. If you’re in Ottawa, Alberta, BC or Quebec, ask staff whether that branch has switched.

Is KFC halal in the UK?

Some are. KFC says it has around 1,000 restaurants in the UK and Ireland, and around 200 of them in the UK serve halal food. Those restaurants are certified by the Halal Food Authority (HFA), which audits them.

In a halal KFC restaurant, all food and drink on the menu is HFA approved, and no pork ingredients are handled. The other 800 or so UK restaurants are not halal.

The stunning question

KFC UK says its chicken is stunned before slaughter, including in halal restaurants. The HFA accepts stunning as long as the bird is alive at the moment of slaughter. The Halal Monitoring Committee (HMC), another UK certifier, does not accept stunning and requires hand slaughter.

So whether a UK halal KFC is halal for you depends on which standard you follow. If you only eat HMC certified meat, halal KFC in the UK won’t meet your standard. If you accept HFA certification, it will.

How to find a halal KFC in the UK

Use the store finder on KFC’s website or app. Halal restaurants are marked, and delivery apps also show halal status. Halal branches are most common in cities with large Muslim communities, such as London, Birmingham, Manchester, Bradford and Leicester. Branches can change status, so check each time you visit a new one.

Is KFC halal in the USA?

No. KFC in the United States is not halal certified at corporate level, and most US restaurants serve chicken that isn’t halal.

In 2009, KFC said it had no plans to test a halal menu in the US and that only a handful of franchise locations, in places like Chicago and Atlanta, served halal items. The same year, KFC introduced a policy that bars franchisees from advertising religious dietary claims.

That policy was tested in court. In 2018, a federal judge in Chicago ruled against Afzal Lokhandwala, a franchisee who had advertised halal chicken at his Illinois restaurants for 14 years. His halal chicken was certified by the Islamic Society of Washington Area, but the court upheld KFC’s right to control advertising.

What this means for you: a US KFC might serve halal chicken, but it isn’t allowed to say so on signs or menus. If a staff member tells you it’s halal, ask who certifies it and to see the certificate. Posts on social media about halal KFC in Houston or New York aren’t proof for the branch in front of you.

Is KFC halal in Muslim majority countries?

Malaysia

Yes. KFC Malaysia is run by QSR Brands. It says JAKIM, Malaysia’s Department of Islamic Development, inspects its factory, restaurants, ingredients and processes. The company says all products it makes and sells in Malaysia are halal, and imported items need certification from their home country plus approval from its own Shariah Advisory Council.

Singapore

Yes. KFC Singapore’s outlets are certified by MUIS, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore. Certificates are issued per outlet, so a newly opened branch is covered only once its own certificate arrives. You can check any outlet on the MUIS HalalSG register.

Pakistan

KFC has operated in Pakistan since 1997 and now has more than 150 restaurants. Pakistan is a Muslim majority country where chicken sold to the public is expected to be halal, and Muslims there eat at KFC as a matter of course. We couldn’t find a named certifier on KFC Pakistan’s own website, though, so if you need to see a certificate, ask the branch.

Middle East

In the Gulf states, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman, national rules require meat sold to the public to be halal. KFC restaurants there serve halal chicken.

Is KFC halal in South Africa?

Some stores are. The South African National Halaal Authority (SANHA) says it has never certified any KFC outlet. KFC’s head office hasn’t agreed to SANHA’s full supply chain requirements.

The National Independent Halaal Trust (NIHT) does certify KFC stores and publishes a list of them. The Muslim Judicial Council Halaal Trust (MJCHT) has also confirmed that a KFC distribution centre met its halaal standard.

In February 2025, a message went viral claiming KFC had lost its halaal certification. SANHA said the message was fake. Check the NIHT list for your nearest store, and look for a current NIHT certificate inside.

Is KFC halal in Australia?

Some stores are, mostly in suburbs with large Muslim communities, such as parts of western Sydney and northern Melbourne. KFC Australia doesn’t have a national halal policy. Halal status is set store by store, so ask the branch and look for a current certificate from a recognised Australian certifier.

Which KFC menu items are halal?

In a certified halal KFC, everything on the menu is covered by the certificate. In the UK, KFC says all food and drink at halal restaurants is HFA approved.

In a restaurant that isn’t halal, the answer changes item by item:

If you follow a strict view on cross contamination, a non halal KFC isn’t a good choice even for sides, because the fryers and surfaces are shared with non halal chicken.

Can Muslims eat at a KFC that isn’t certified?

Most scholars and the major halal certifiers say no, if the chicken wasn’t slaughtered by Islamic rules. Some scholars allow meat slaughtered by Christians and Jews, based on Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:5, which permits the food of the People of the Book. Others say that permission doesn’t cover industrial slaughter where the method and the person doing it are unknown, or where stunning may kill the bird first.

How to check if your KFC branch is halal

1. Check the country first. Use the table at the top of this page.
2. Use the official finder where there is one. KFC UK marks halal restaurants on its website and app. In South Africa, use the NIHT store list. In Singapore, use the MUIS HalalSG register.
3. Look for a restaurant certificate, not a supplier one. It should name the restaurant’s address, the certifier and a date that hasn’t expired. A certificate that only names a chicken plant covers the chicken, not the kitchen.
4. Ask two questions. “Is all the chicken halal, and who certifies it?” and “Do you serve any pork here?” If staff can’t answer, treat it as not halal.
