Dave’s Hot Chicken serves halal chicken. Its US restaurant pages say “our restaurants serve halal chicken”, and its UK FAQ says, “All the chicken served in our restaurants is Halal.” That’s why Dave’s is popular with Muslims.

But there are two details worth knowing. In the UK, Dave’s says its chickens are “pre stunned” before being hand slaughtered. And Dave’s UK says its “supply chain and kitchen do not operate under Halal procedures”. So the chicken is halal, but the restaurant isn’t halal certified. Dave’s US restaurant pages, from Los Angeles and New York to Boston, Fairfax and Southfield, say the restaurants “serve halal chicken”. Dave’s doesn’t publish a US halal FAQ, name a certifier, or say how the chicken is slaughtered.

That leaves questions many US Muslims ask:

• Is it hand slaughtered or machine slaughtered? Dave’s doesn’t say for the US.
• Is it stunned? Dave’s doesn’t say for the US.
• Who certifies it? Some websites name a certifier, but we couldn’t find Dave’s confirming one.

If these matter to you, ask your restaurant to show the supplier’s halal certificate.

Is Dave’s Hot Chicken halal in the UK?

Yes, the chicken is. Dave’s opened in the UK on Shaftesbury Avenue, London, in December 2024. Its UK FAQ says:

• “All the chicken served in our restaurants is Halal. We source it from trusted suppliers who are certified as leading providers of Halal chicken.”
• “All our Halal chickens are pre stunned to reduce pain and fear before being hand slaughtered, following Islamic guidelines.”
• “The Halal certification documents from our suppliers can be accessed upon request at any of our restaurants.”
• “We buy our chicken from Halal suppliers, however our supply chain and kitchen do not operate under Halal procedures. We do not currently hold Halal certification for any of our other ingredients.”

When it launched, Dave’s UK told halal food bloggers that its London chicken came from a Halal Food Authority (HFA) approved supplier.

What the stunning means for you

UK certifiers disagree on stunning:

• The HFA accepts stunning if the bird is alive when it’s slaughtered.
• The Halal Monitoring Committee (HMC) doesn’t accept stunning.

If you only eat unstunned (HMC) chicken, Dave’s UK won’t meet your standard.

Halal chicken vs a halal restaurant

At Dave’s, the chicken is halal when it arrives. But the other ingredients, such as sauces, spice mixes, buns, cheese and shake bases, aren’t halal certified, and the kitchen doesn’t follow halal procedures. There’s no pork on the core menu, which removes the biggest cross contamination worry.

Many Muslims are comfortable with this. Others prefer restaurants where the whole kitchen is certified.

Is Dave’s still halal after being sold?

Yes, as far as Dave’s own statements go. In June 2025, private equity firm Roark Capital bought a majority stake in Dave’s Hot Chicken in a deal reported at about $1 billion. Dave’s US and UK pages still say the chicken is halal. If that changes, it would show on those pages first.

Dave’s has restaurants in Canada and the Middle East. In the Gulf, meat sold to the public must meet local halal rules. In Canada, ask your restaurant to show the supplier’s halal certificate.
