In the UK, Doritos are halal by their ingredients. The flavours we checked, including Cool Original, Tangy Cheese and Chilli Heatwave, are labelled “Suitable for Vegetarians” on the Doritos UK website, which means no meat, gelatin or animal rennet. They aren’t halal certified.

Why isn’t Doritos halal certified in the UK?

What about flavourings and alcohol?

Doritos UK doesn’t publish the detail of its flavourings. Some food flavourings use a tiny amount of ethanol as a carrier. Most scholars and certifiers don’t treat this as a problem, because it can’t intoxicate and dissolves completely into the food. Is Doritos halal in the USA?

It depends on the flavour. Frito-Lay, the PepsiCo company that makes Doritos in the US, says the enzymes used in its cheese flavours “may come from vegetable, microbial and/or animal sources”. It has also said that some of the animal enzymes it uses come from pork. In 2014, Frito-Lay staff told the Vegetarian Resource Group that all cheese and cheese flavouring in Doritos contains animal enzymes.

Frito-Lay doesn’t say which enzymes are in which flavour, and its old list of products made without pork enzymes is no longer online. So for a Muslim, any US Doritos flavour with cheese is doubtful.

How to check a US Doritos bag

1. Look for “cheese” in the ingredients. If you see “cheddar cheese (milk, cheese cultures, salt, enzymes)”, the enzyme source isn’t stated.
2. Look for whey. Whey is a by product of cheese making and raises the same question.
3. Look for a vegetarian or halal mark. Most US Doritos have neither.
4. If there’s no cheese or dairy, the main question left is flavourings, which most scholars accept.

Does Doritos have pork?

No Doritos flavour lists pork meat, pork fat or gelatin. The question is enzymes. In the US, Frito-Lay says animal enzymes, some from pork, may be used in cheese flavours. In the UK, the vegetarian label rules this out.

Is Doritos halal in Canada?

Canadian Doritos follow a similar approach to the US. Cheese flavours list cheese made with enzymes without naming the source, so they’re doubtful for Muslims. Check each bag, and choose flavours without cheese or dairy if you want to avoid the question.

The E635 question

Many Doritos flavours contain flavour enhancers called disodium ribonucleotides (E635), or disodium guanylate (E627) and disodium inosinate (E631). These can be made from fish, meat or by fermenting plant sugars. Today most are made by fermentation.

In the UK, the vegetarian label means they aren’t from meat or fish. In the US, the source isn’t stated, but fermentation is the usual method, and most halal guides treat these enhancers as halal unless shown otherwise.

Are Doritos vegetarian or vegan?
