Are Smarties Halal? Nestlé vs US Smarties by Country

It depends which Smarties you mean, and where you bought them. There are two completely different sweets with the same name. Nestlé Smarties are sugar coated milk chocolate, sold in the UK, Canada, Europe and Australia. US Smarties are chalky tablet sweets made by the Smarties Candy Company in New Jersey.

UK and Canadian Nestlé Smarties aren’t halal certified, but they’re vegetarian with plant based colours, and scholars who reviewed the ingredients have ruled them halal suitable. US Smarties are vegan. Australian Smarties are the odd ones out: their label lists carmine, a red colour made from insects.

The shared name is behind a lot of wrong answers online, including our own old version of this page.

Nestlé Smarties go back to Rowntree’s of York, which sold “Chocolate Beans” from 1882 and renamed them Smarties in 1937. Nestlé bought Rowntree in 1988. UK and European Smarties have been made in Hamburg, Germany, since 2007. They’re sold across Europe, Canada, Australia and parts of Asia, but not in the US.

US Smarties are made by the Smarties Candy Company, founded in 1949 by Edward Dee. They’re pressed dextrose tablets in a twist wrapper, made in Union, New Jersey, and Newmarket, Ontario. In Canada they’re sold as Rockets, because Nestlé holds the Smarties name there.

So “Are Smarties halal?” has two answers, and you need to know which sweet is in your hand. The quick way to tell: if it’s chocolate inside a crunchy coloured shell, it’s Nestlé. If it’s a hard, chalky disc in a clear twist wrapper, it’s the US candy.

Are Nestlé Smarties halal in the UK?

They aren’t certified, but most Muslims and the scholars who have looked at them treat them as halal.

Here’s what Nestlé UK says on its Smarties page:

• “None of the Smarties® products are halal certified.”
• “Yes, both SMARTIES® and Smarties® Buttons are suitable for a vegetarian diet.”
• The colours come “from natural ingredients including Spirulina, Red Radish, Safflower, Red Beet, Curcumin, Beta Carotene and Malt Barley.”
• Smarties contain no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. They aren’t vegan, because they contain milk.

Vegetarian means no meat, fish, gelatin or insect colours. The rest of the recipe is sugar, milk and cocoa ingredients, none of which raise a halal concern.

On 7 January 2026, Markazul Fiqh, a UK fatwa body, published a resolution on UK made Smarties. It was issued by Mufti Bilal al-Mahmudi, with the agreement of Mufti Faisal al-Mahmudi and Mufti Zameelur Rahman. Their conclusion: “no ingredients are identified as ḥarām or doubtful. Therefore, UK-manufactured Smarties are ḥalāl suitable.” They add that this is a ruling on the ingredients, not an endorsement to buy the product.

The Halal Life, a UK halal product database, also lists Smarties Milk Choc, Buttons, Sharing Bags, Blocks and Easter Eggs as halal suitable.

Are Smarties halal in Canada?

Yes, based on the ingredients. AskHalal reviewed Nestlé Canada’s Smarties in October 2021, with the review approved by Mufti Abrar Koya.

Nestlé Canada confirmed that “all food colours in this product are either from synthetic sources or vegetarian sources.” Red Smarties get their colour from beet juice. The whey is made with microbial rennet, and the vanilla flavour contains no ethyl alcohol. AskHalal rated them halal.

Canada switched to natural colours in 2009 and 2010, after the UK, so older reviews that mention artificial or insect colours are out of date.

Canadian packs list ingredients in English and French. Look at the colours: you should see plant sources like beet juice or spirulina, and you shouldn’t see carmine or cochineal. AskHalal’s review covered the standard product, so check limited editions separately. If you’re in Canada and see Rockets, those are the US style tablet sweets, covered further down.

Are Smarties halal in Australia?

Australia is where it gets harder. Australian Smarties are made in Australia to a different recipe. The ingredients listed on Open Food Facts include:

• Colours: carmine, beta carotene, anthocyanin, copper chlorophyllin, turmeric
• Glazing agents 903 (carnauba wax, from a palm) and 901 (beeswax)
• Spirulina powder

Carnauba wax and beeswax are fine. Carmine (E120), also called cochineal, is a red dye made from crushed insects, and scholars disagree about it.

Nestlé Australia keeps a list of its halal certified products and says it reviews it regularly. We didn’t find Smarties on it, so treat Australian Smarties as not certified. Nestlé Australia says it uses different certifying bodies depending on where a product is made, so a halal logo on the pack is the quickest check for any Nestlé sweet you buy there. Imported UK Smarties sold in Australian shops follow the UK recipe, so read the back of the pack to see where it was made.

Carmine: why scholars disagree

The question is whether an insect based colour is lawful. Allah describes the Prophet as one who “makes lawful for them the good things and prohibits for them the evil” (Surah Al-A’raf 7:157). Many scholars count insects among the impure things (khaba’ith) this verse forbids.

Others point to the hadith: “Two dead things and two bloods have been made lawful for us. The two dead things are fish and locusts” (Sunan Ibn Majah 3314). Locusts are insects, so they argue not every insect is forbidden.

Are American Smarties halal?

The US tablet candy is about as simple as sweets get. The Smarties Candy Company lists the ingredients as:

“DEXTROSE, CITRIC ACID, CALCIUM STEARATE, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, COLORS (RED 40 LAKE, YELLOW 5 LAKE, YELLOW 6 LAKE, BLUE 2 LAKE).”

The company says “All Smarties® products are vegetarian and vegan,” and they’re gluten free.

Two ingredients sometimes worry people:

• Calcium stearate can come from animal or plant fat. Because the company says every product is vegan, it must be plant based here.
• Natural flavour can be carried in a small amount of alcohol. Most scholars and certifiers allow tiny traces of alcohol used as a flavour solvent, because it isn’t made from wine and doesn’t intoxicate. Stricter scholars disagree.

US Smarties aren’t halal certified, but on the ingredients, most Muslims would consider them halal. The same goes for Rockets in Canada, which come from the company’s Ontario factory. Seasonal packs, like candy necklaces or lollipops, use slightly different recipes, so read those labels too.

Why websites disagree about Smarties

Search “are Smarties halal” and you’ll find three different answers on page one: halal, doubtful (mushbooh) and haram. Here’s why.

1. Certification vs ingredients. Some sites call a product haram just because it isn’t certified. That isn’t how Islamic law works. A product with only halal ingredients is halal whether or not it has a logo. A certificate is a way of checking, not the ruling itself.
2. Trust in the manufacturer. One site marks UK Smarties as doubtful because the emulsifier E471 can come from animal fat, and Nestlé’s vegetarian claim is its own statement, not an audit. That’s a fair point. But Nestlé UK says Smarties are vegetarian, and a vegetarian product can’t use animal fat E471.
3. Mixing up the two sweets, or the countries. An answer about Australian Smarties (with carmine) doesn’t apply to UK Smarties, and neither applies to the US candy.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) gave us a rule for real uncertainty:

“Both legal and illegal things are evident but in between them there are doubtful (suspicious) things and most of the people have no knowledge about them. So whoever saves himself from these suspicious things saves his religion and his honor.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 52)

With UK and Canadian Smarties, the ingredients are known and published, so most scholars don’t see them as doubtful. With Australian Smarties, the doubt is real if you follow a school that forbids carmine.

White Smarties, ice cream and special editions

Recipes change between products. Here’s what to watch for:

• White chocolate Smarties. The Halal Life lists them as halal suitable in the UK. Another site says a Nestlé halal suitability list excluded white Smarties. Nestlé’s public vegetarian statement names Smarties and Smarties Buttons only. Read the pack and ask Nestlé if you’re unsure.
• Smarties ice cream and desserts are made by different companies and can contain other stabilisers. Check the label. See our guide to whether gelatin is halal if you spot gelatin.
• Gulf and Asian markets. Smarties sold in Muslim majority countries may come from different factories. Look for a halal logo on the pack, and remember that a logo from a recognised certifier tells you more than a website’s opinion, including ours.

Allah says: “O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth that is lawful and good” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:168). With sweets, that mostly means reading the label.
